My Hero Academia, S7 Ep 4 Review
Last week for My Hero Academia, I didn’t pull punches when it came to the big reveal about Aoyama. On one hand, I didn’t like the fact that he was the spy at UA High for All for One due to not being that prominent a character. On the other hand, though, I did like how readily his classmates were willing to forgive him. Even if they don’t hold anything against him, though, Aoyama still broke the law. If he wants to make things right, he’s got to help bring down All for One.
Thankfully, as the students point out, this is the biggest break they’ve gotten in the fight against the elusive villain. And they’re going to use it for all it’s worth!
Aoyama Needs to Earn His Redemption
Picking up where the last episode left off, his friends might forgive him, but Aoyama is still in trouble. Even though no one wants to do it (including the grown-ups), they still have to detain Aoyama and his family. Thanks to the belief that his classmates have in him and Mr. Aizawa’s own interjections, though, it’s made clear that this isn’t permanent. They need to make sure All for One hasn’t rigged them to explode if they’re compromised, like he did with Lady Nagant.
More importantly, though, Aizawa needs to convince his student to not let All for One control him anymore. Aoyama never wanted to work for All for One, but the sheer malice and fear of the legendary villain has left the boy terrified. Even if they beat him, the guilt will remain. Aoyama fears he won’t be worthy of being a hero. And it’s Aizawa that has to show him that that’s not true.
One of the things that I love about My Hero Academia is how it tries to look at what makes a person a hero. And more often than not, you don’t need powers or a cool costume to do so. Even doing something as simple as reassuring someone terrified that they’re not alone can make a person a hero. And, while I know it’s a bit cliche, I did like how Aizawa convinces Aoyama to face his fears. Mr. Aizawa is ultimately right, though, when he says that his student can’t take back what he did. What he can do is help make things right by helping bring down All for One.
And now, thanks to Aoyama, the Heroes can start putting a plan into motion.
Plans are In Place for the Final Battle
While much of the episode focuses on Aoyama’s plight and Class 1-A preparing for the final battle (including another visit to the ever-funny Hatsume), what the adults do caught my attention. As All Might points out, the only way they can win is if they can keep All for One and Shigaraki far away from each other during the final battle. In addition, they’ll have to do the same for the rest of the League and PLF. They’ll have to separate them and keep them from joining forces if they want to have a chance of winning. Or, in other words, they need to divide and conquer.
Since I’ve read the manga, I already know what’s going to happen next and what the heroes plan is. And trust me when I say this: we should enjoy the calm before the storm while we can, anime-only watchers. Because if I’m right about next week’s episode, then this will be our last chance to catch a breath. Once the fighting begins, it’s going to be a rollercoaster to the finish.
So, I know some people might be itching for My Hero Academia to get to the final battle, but that doesn’t make these episodes any less important. Right now, Aoyama is the key to all of this, and I like how his friends willingness to forgive him, and him wanting to make things right, shows how hopeful the series is regarding heroes. With how bad the world can be, we all need a little more hope in our lives. Go Beyond, PLUS ULTRA!
