My Hero Academia S7 Ep 5 Review
If you’ve paid attention to my blog, then you know there are certain moments in a story that I adore. One of my favorites is that moment when a smug, chessmaster of an antagonist gets thrown for a loop. The look of surprise, shock, confusion, or utter disbelief is so entertaining! And even though we can’t actually see his face, its still nice to imagine that’s what All for One has this week on My Hero Academia.
To recap, the last two episodes have revealed that Yuga Aoyama, one of Midoriya’s classmates, has been the unwilling spy for All for One. Now that he’s been outed, though, the Heroes and students realize that they finally have an advantage on the self-proclaimed Demon Lord. And they aren’t passing it up. Thus, they’ve devised a plan to stump the demon king. And it worked perfectly…even if it did seem a little forced.
The Villains Have Depth…Except for All for One
With all the chaos that’s going to unfurl in the final season, I actually forgot about the opening scenes with the villains in this episode. However, I do have to give My Hero Academia praise, once more, for the focus it puts on the series antagonists. Even if they’re villains and have committed serious crimes like mass murder and the like, the villains of MHA remain grounded in their humanity. Nowhere in the episode is this shown better than with Himiko Toga.
I cannot condone everything that Toga has done. She’s killed so many people, after all. However, I also like how the story makes it clear that she’s not just being evil for the sake of it. She was driven into it because society let her down (hence the episode title.) So despite everything, I still feel bad for her. Her parents really should have gotten her the therapy she clearly needed instead of trying to get her to act “normal.”
It did feel pretty cathartic seeing Dabi burn down the home of her deadbeat parents, though.
The Heroes Head to War
Once that is done, though, most of the rest of the episode focuses on the heroes making final preparations. To start with, they move all the students out of UA to a newly-fortified base just outside the city. And from there, they wait.
I’ll be honest: even in the manga, I thought this next bit was weak. The mangaka had the chance to focus on each student of Class 1-A as they got ready for the final battle. Instead, they just focus on Deku and Uraraka. And for the record, they don’t even address the potential romance between the the two heroes.
The end to the episode, though? I enjoyed it.
All for One Got Played Like a Chump
Having read the manga beforehand, I already knew that the heroes plan was to lure All for One out. They had Aoyama lay the trap, and used Deku as the bait. And All for One fell for it hook, line, and sinker.
I know it seems crazy that someone as smart as All for One could get duped, but it actually isn’t. All for One may be great at coming up with plans that span decades, but he’s so sure of himself that that’s a weakness. And more imporantly, he failed to understand that Aoyama’s love for his parents outweighed his fear of the “Demon King.”
Thus, the curtain rises on the final battle. From here on out, it’s a no-holds-barred fight to the finish with the fight of the entire world at stake. And trust me, this is going to be good! And while I have some issues, this was still a good way to tee us up for the final battle. Go beyond, PLUS ULTRA!!
I Give “Let you Down” a 3.5/5
