Earlier today, the world watched as the late Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Great Britain for more than 70 years, was laid to rest in a historic funeral. The last time Great Britain laid a monarch to rest was 70 years ago, with the death of Elizabeth’s father, King George VI. The last time Britain saw a state funeral was in 1965, with the death of her first Prime Minister, and paternal friend, Sir Winston Churchill.

It still feels so surreal, waking up before dawn to see the funeral for the woman who’s ruled a country longer than most people have been alive. As an American, I’m used to our leader’s changing every 4 years; 8 years if they do a good enough job. They use a similar process in Great Britain, but through it all, they had the Queen. She was this beacon of stability in a world that seemed to get crazier each passing day. And now, she’s gone.

It may be centuries before we might see another person lead a nation for so long, figurehead or otherwise. It will likely be just as long before we have someone who so many people have such a positive opinion of, even if not everyone liked her. Queen Elizabeth leaves behind a monumental legacy and impact on the world. She will be missed by many.
