As Luz watches in this mysterious world between worlds, she discovers that her Mom’s remained none the wiser about where she’s been due to someone else taking her place. This is Vee, a young Basilisk who escaped to Earth the moment Luz arrived on the Boiling Isles and took her place. At first, Luz thinks this is the perfect solution; it means she can keep her Mom in the dark about everything and avoid the drama! However, Vee doesn’t hesitate to chew Luz out for taking her life on Earth for granted, since she never got to have anything as nice as she did, taking Luz aback.

Ultimately, circumstances force Luz to having to tell her Mom the truth anyway, and while they save Vee, Camila takes things…poorly. It’s at this moment that Camila screws up. She makes Luz give a hasty promise that when she finds a way home, she’ll stay there. Luz interprets this as meaning to never return to the Boiling Isles, and Luz has no choice but to agree for her Mom’s sake. That promise nearly ends up destroying Luz.

Next, Luz has to deal with an unforeseen issue being stuck on the Boiling Isles brings about. On the anniversary of her father’s passing, she’s unable to be at his grave with her Mother, leading her to become more reckless than usual and almost derail Amity’s attempts to bond with her own dad. While she does make things right, the thought still weighs heavily on her. Her dad was the only person who truly understood her, and she couldn’t even be there to remember him.

To say that the episode “Hollow Mind,” traumatized Luz would be an understatement. The events of that episode and learning what Belos has planned leave her horrified. However, the revelation that Belos and Philip Wittebane were the same person and that it was only thanks to her help that Belos managed to start his plans at all completely shatters her spirit. In one, single moment, Luz is made to believe that everything terrible that’s happened on the Boiling Isles for the last four hundred years, the rise of Belos, the persecution of wild Witches, Eda getting cursed, is all her fault. It’s a miracle that she doesn’t go catatonic from the revelation.

For the remainder of the season, Luz does everything she can to try and fix what she considers her mistake, only to be met by failure at every turn. Her journey to the Titan Trappers’ island almost gets her and King killed, the Emperor’s Coven ransacks the Owl House, and she and Eda actually fight when she learns Eda has no plan to stop Belos. The only keeping her together is the support of the friends she’s made, but even that’s not enough. Luz ultimately tries to fix things alone, choosing to confront Belos by herself and almost getting herself killed in the process.

Ultimately, the Day of Unity is stopped, but only when King frees the god-like entity known as the Collector, who proceeds to turn the Boiling Isles into his personal playground. And despite desperately trying to keep King from leaving her, Luz can only watch as her adoptive brother forces her through the portal back to Earth, leaving her and friends stranded there.

Luz has officially hit rock bottom.
