Shiki…Where in the Universe is Shiki?!?
so there’s good news and bad news. The good news is that Shiki managed to do it! He defeated Chronobecca, forced the Chronophage to devour Mother, and transformed her back into Earth! All of existence is now saved! So…where is Shiki?
That’s the bad news: we dont know. The answer to that might end up lying in the future.
As an aside, it looks like the cover pages for the final chapters of the series are setting up to give us some kind of message. I’m betting that its going to say “Arigato!” or “thank you!” in Japanese.

Recap

As Shiki finally succeeds in forcing the Chronophage to swallow Mother, Chronobecca says something to him. They feel like the one they looked for used to talk the same way about friends.

Outside, everyone watches as the Chronophage begins to fade away, and its offspring along with it. The warped and distorted space returns to normal. And, as everyone sees, their plan worked. Mother has returned to her original form of Earth (and Xiao Mei, too.) And everyone in the fleet and the universe at large begins to celebrate! The Universe is going to live! However, Rebecca soon realizes something: Shiki is nowhere to be found. As she frantically starts looking for her friend, Ziggy fears the worst: that the Chronophage took him away.
20,000 years later, in a certain location, a young woman awakens from her slumber.

Review
Okay, first and foremost, I’m not going to panic just yet. This isn’t the first time that Mashima has made it look like the main protagonist died. He did the same thing with Haru in Rave Master and Natsu in Fairy Tail. Granted, Haru did technically die, but he came back. In addition, there’s also the fact that we still have a few chapters left in the series. Knowing Mashima, he’s going to give Shiki the chance to have a happy ending.
On a more important note, I think that this chapter pretty much confirmed that the being at the heart of the Chronophage was Rebecca. Or rather, the version of Rebecca we see waking up in the future. And I do have a theory that could explain all of this.
My guess is that that version of Rebecca transferred her mind into a robotic body so that she could travel into the past in search of Shiki. However, she spent so much time in the past that she started to forget about who she was and who she was looking for. Eventually, the despair caused her Time Ether to overwhelm her, creating the Chronophage in the process.
Its a crazy theory, I know, but right now, its all I’ve got to work on. We won’t know the whole story until Mashima tells it to us. In addition, it doesn’t explain where Shiki is. All I know is that he probably isn’t dead. Still, it does give some extra tension for these last few chapters. Hopefully, Edens Zero can end up sticking the landing.
