This Broadcast Must be Protected at all Costs!

One Piece Chapter 1109 Review/Recap

Things aren’t looking suitable for Dr. Vegapunk right now. First, he got stabbed by the demonic Saturn. Then, his friend(?), Kizaru, impaled him with his light sword. If this keeps up, he won’t make it off Egghead Island Alive. The good news is that he seemed to have planned: he recorded a broadcast set to go out to the world if something happened. The bad news? The Five Elders are done messing around.

Just when things started looking up, this happened.

One Piece Chapter 1109-The Broadcast Begins

The Buster Call fleet is at a complete loss regarding how Vegapunk’s sending this message. They can’t cut the transmission, and thanks to the barrier in the lab phase, they can’t shut it off. Worse (for them), the broadcast reveals it’s piggybacking off their comms. Their only saving grace is that in the recording, Vegapunk and the Satellites give everyone ten minutes to get visual transponder snails ready.

People worldwide, some of whom have been friends and allies of the Straw Hats, scramble to get things ready for the broadcast. No one knows what Vegapunk plans to say, but they’re all prepared to hear his message. However, in Mariejois, the other Five Elders are fuming. They realize Vegapunk planned this in case his main body died. Knowing what he might tell people, they’re determined to stop the broadcast.

As the rest of the Straw Hats and Giants get closer to escaping, Luffy keeps Kizaru and Saturn at bay with ease.

Despite his best efforts, though, Saturn refuses to stay down. The creature doesn’t even take any damage. Out of options and time, the Gorosei say they need to stop that broadcast. Thus, Saturn prepares the same summoning ritual that brought him to the island. Black lightning and smoke erupt from the ground as an ominous presence can be felt by everyone.

Review

You know, the possibility that the rest of the Gorosei might show up on Egghead never crossed my mind. Oops.

To clear the air, I’m a little upset that we must wait longer to learn what Vegapunk wants to tell everyone. Last week, I kept talking about how it was likely something to do with the Void Century and the lies of the World Government. In addition, the fact that the Five Elders speculate he set this broadcast to go off if he died is worrying. That could mean that he may very well be dead. At least, the original Vegapunk. If he is now dead, protecting his Satellites takes top priority.

That said, I can’t help but applaud Vegapunk’s cleverness. He’s ensured that the entire world will hear his message by using the Marines’ tech against them. And it seems like almost everyone who has been a friend or ally to the Straw Hats will listen to the broadcast. All the heroes must do is ensure it’s still running ten minutes from now.

Can Luffy Win Against the Five Elders?

The Five Elders won’t make this easy.

Just stay, man. Please? Source-Shonen Jump, Viz Media, TCB Scans

This chapter at least proves that Kizaru is now no match for Luffy. He shouldn’t get back up if he knows what’s good for him. However, the fact that Saturn proves immune to Luffy’s attacks is very concerning. If Luffy can’t beat him before he runs out of energy, it’s game over. Worse, now the other Five Elders are joining the battle.

I repeat: the Five Elders, the people everyone thinks run the World Government, are coming down to fight Luffy. This is unprecedented. If you recall, Sabo had no choice but to run away from these monsters and Im. Can Luffy hold his own against all five of them? I want to believe so, but they still might be too much.

Right now, all Luffy and the others can do is ensure the broadcast keeps playing. They may never get another chance to expose the World Government for the despotic regime it is. Sadly, we must wait another two weeks to learn what happens next. However, I want to remind everyone that the chapter after these breaks is usually fantastic. Fingers crossed!
