Werewolf by Night Review

I never saw the Universal Monsters movies before, but I know about their impact on pop culture. They provided the public with definitive versions of famous monsters like Dracula and Frankenstein’s Monster. Now, even the MCU’s trying to emulate the classic monster movies for Halloween. The end result, Werewolf by Night, is a triumphant masterpiece. A perfect blend of classic horror and the often-overlooked horror elements of Marvel comics.

Monster Hunters Ain’t That Surprising

In a universe filled with heroes, gods, magic, time travel, does the existence of monsters come as any surprise for anyone? The answer is a resounding no: monsters exist in the MCU, and so do the people that hunt them. Thus, when the most famous monster hunter of all, Ulysses Bloodstone, dies, the best hunters in the world congregate to choose his successor via a trial. 

There are several candidates that show up, but the ones that should be the main focus are Jack Russell, an unassuming guy with a high kill count, and Elsa Bloodstone, Ulysses estranged daughter. It’s never explained why, but it seems that she left her home due to not being on good terms with her stepmother. To be fair, though, her stepmother is a very unpleasant woman! The only reason Elsa returned is so she can gain her father’s bloodstone, which provides longevity, among other powers. Thus, we get to the main event of the special: the monster hunt. Each hunter enters a maze to chase a monster with the bloodstone attached to it. The first one to kill it and get the stone wins.

On the surface, it seems like a simple premise. However, it soon becomes clear that it’s not so simple.

Not Evil, Just Misunderstood

As it turns out, Jack wasn’t interested in getting the bloodstone for himself. He just wanted to help out the monster, AKA Ted, AKA Man-Thing, a being that’s the product of a science experiment gone wrong combined with mystical energy. Despite his monstrous, plant-like appearance, though, Man-Thing’s a gentle giant, and a friend of Jack. He only acts threatening to those that seek to do him harm, as he chooses to spare Elsa when she chooses to not attack him. 

I picked up on it early on, but I want to say it anyway: most of the monster hunters are racist Van Helsings. They automatically assume that anything that looks like a monster is a threat and must die, regardless of whether or not it actually is a threat. In this case, Man-Thing’s not evil; just misunderstood, as is Jack. 

As it turns out, Jack is a werewolf, albeit one that goes out of his way to make sure he can’t hurt anyone when he turns into a werewolf. Despite this, Mrs. Bloodstone and the other hunters don’t care, since they capture him and Elsa and trap them inside a cage with the goal of having Jack, the Werewolf by Night, kill Elsa.

Sometimes, the biggest monsters in the universe are the ones who think they’re doing the world a favor. In reality, they’re just being bullies who need a swift kick in the butt. In this case, Jack delivers a well-deserved ass-kicking as he proceeds to break free as a werewolf and kills all the monster hunters. Except for Ulysses Bloodstone’s widow; she dies at the hands of Man-Thing. 

The Monsters Win!

Thus, the story ends with Elsa reclaiming her birthright, the bloodstone, and her dad’s home. As for Jack and Man-Thing, they get to walk away. Happy ending for the good guys!

Overall, I thought that this was a very fun Halloween special for Marvel to do. It pays homage to classic horror with its black-and-white appearance. It doesn’t go too heavy on CGI in favor of practical effects. There’s even a shout-out to The Cryptkeeper in the form of Ulysses Bloodstone’s corpse acting like an animatronic. It’s a lot of fun. Hopefully, Marvel will decide to do more horror-themed stuff in the future. I wouldn’t mind seeing this sort of stuff for Halloween.

Marvel What If…? Episode 9 Review

For nine weeks, Marvel’s given us our first look at the new MCU Multiverse with their animated series, What If…? At first, it looked like this show would be an anthology series. We’d look at an alternate version of the MCU every episode, then move on. However, all that changed when Marvel threw us a universe-sized curveball. In one universe, Ultron beat the Avengers, got the Infinity Stones, and killed almost everyone. Worse, he learned how to travel to other universes and stood poised to wipe out all life in the multiverse. Not even the Watcher could sit back and do nothing. It was time for him to step in and save the multiverse. But first, he was going to need a team.

Multiversal Avengers, Assemble!

The first few minutes of the episode pick up where we last left off: the Watcher and Strange Supreme need to assemble a team to stop Infinite Ultron. Thus, they recruit heroes from several of the worlds we’ve seen throughout the season. The exceptions being the universe where the Avengers all died, and the zombie universe. The latter for obvious reasons.

However, there’s one member coming from a universe we never got to see: one where Gamora somehow beat Thanos. Rumor has it that that story was supposed to be in the first season, but got pushed back, leaving fans left in the dark for the moment. After catching everyone up to speed, the Watcher dubs his new team…the Guardians of the Multiverse.

While I can understand why he’d give them that name, I don’t like it. It seems better to have something with the Avengers in it. Considering that this is the multiverse equivalent of the Avengers first assembling, it would be appropriate. Alas, there’s no time to worry about that, as the threat of Ultron comes knocking.

The Final Battle For the Multiverse Was…Okay.

The team’s fight against Infinite Ultron ends up taking them back to his original universe, where they’re joined by Black Widow, who’s now the last sentient being left on Earth. With her help, they come close to beating Ultron, but fail to destroy the Stones. Turns out, the MCU’s Infinity Stones don’t just work outside their universe; they’re unique, meaning any attempts to destroy them with another universe’s tech won’t work!

In the end, it doesn’t matter: Natasha fires a well placed arrow into Ultron, uploading Zola into him and ending Ultron for good. Then Killmonger pulls the classic double-cross, and he and Zola get sealed away in a pocket of reality, forever engaged in a tug of war for the Stones. Justice!

As far as battles go, this one met all the basic tenets of the MCU. Strange Supreme showcased how magically jacked he was several times, even opening a portal to the zombie universe! However, the overall final battle felt…meh. Considering how it’s supposed to be for the fate of the multiverse, we shouldn’t feel like that. Yet, the final battle of Avengers: Endgame carries more emotional weight. Marvel could’ve gotten a lot more creative with it, if you ask me.

What’s Next for the Multiverse?

With the battle over, the Watcher sends everyone back to their respective realities while Strange Supreme guards Killmonger and Zola. However, he gives Natasha a well-deserved reward. Rather than send her to her dead universe, he lets her move to the one where the Avengers never rose, letting her reunite with some of her old friends. As for Captain Carter? The post-credits scene teases that an old friend might be waiting for her.

Speaking of friends, a big highlight of the episode was the relationship Captain Carter and Natasha had. They were firm BFF’s in their universe, and certainly acted like it. However, there was also some romantic subtext going on between them that I think a lot of people will pick up on. I don’t know if we’ll see Captain Carter again, but if we do, I think I now ship her and Nat together.

As for T’Challa, this marks the final time we may see him in the MCU, due to Chadwick’s passing. The worst part is that there could’ve been a Star Lord T’Challa spin-off series, were he still alive. Maybe in another universe, they’re enjoying that right now. For the rest of us, though, we have to wait for season two to travel the multiverse some more.

As far as season finale’s go, I think the action could’ve been a lot better. Still, at least the show tied everything together, so I have to give it credit for that.

Marvel What If…? Episode 8 Review

So, I’m just going to get down to the nitty-gritty for this. The MCU multiversesa has just given us a villain capable of destroying it I’m the form of Ultron. Who, as you recall, was able to push the Avengers to the breaking point in his short existence. Whose legacy would fracture the Avengers and lead to their loss against Thanos. Now, the Watcher’s found a universe where Ultron’s become a mechanical god and defeated almost everyone. And as we saw at the end of last week’s episode, he’s not stopping there.

What if…Ultron Won and Became a God?

In this iteration of the MCU, the Avengers failed to stop Ultron. He managed to upload his mind into what should’ve been the Vision’s body, and curb-stomps humanity before bringing about Judgement Day.Then things get worse: Thanos shows up, and…see for yourself.

With all the Infinity Stones and an inorganic body immune to radiation, Ultron uses the Stones to curb stomp the rest of the universe. It’s a preview of just what would’ve been in store for the main timeline if the Avengers had lost.

Then, things get even worse. For the entire multiverse.

Black Widow is Last One Standing

As Ultron continues wiping out all life, we learn he missed Hawkeye and Black Widow. Back on Earth, they work together to find a secret weapon to help them destroy Ultron: Dr. Zola’s AI. However, due to circumstances beyond their control, the unlikely trio fails in even doing this. Worse, this universe’s Hawkeye, already broken by the loss of everyone he knows, sacrifices his life to give Nat and Zola a chance to escape.

This was a very tough moment to watch, even if it was visually stunning. It also represents a great parallel between the two characters fates in the main universe. However, while Black Widow fans might be happy, Hawkeye fans won’t be. Especially since he died once before in the comics.

All of that, though, is only secondary to the main focus of the episode. Ultron becomes the first multiversal threat that the MCU faces. And it’s partially the Watcher’s fault.

Peekaboo, Ultron Sees You

Having decimated his native universe, Ultron has a moment where he goes “Oh no, what do I do now?” However, thanks to the Stones (and the Watcher’s own narration), he becomes more aware of the universe around him. He can see the Watcher from behind the fourth wall separating him from the rest of the multiverse.

The idea of a character breaking the fourth wall isn’t a new concept, but rarely is it played so menacingly. The Watcher, for all his power, is terrified when he learns Ultron knows about him. That terror turns to desperation as he watches Nat and Barton almost give up, wanting to intervene so badly, but held back by his oath.

Then, Ultron does the impossible. He breaks the walls between universes and attacks the Watcher. In a treat for longtime Marvel fans, we see the Watcher unleash his full power against Ultron, and the fight is Shonen anime levels of action. This was my favorite moment of the entire episode, and we got to see the show’s animators use the medium to its fullest extent. The sight of Ultron growing large enough to devour an entire Galaxy is something I’d never thought I’d see, but was amazing to look at.

In the end, not even the Watcher can stop Ultron, leaving the AI free to wipe out all life in the multiverse. But all is not lost.

Multiverse Spanning Avengers, Assemble

There’s an underlying point to this entire MCU, one that was also made clear in Loki. If left unchecked, a threat in one universe could become a threat to the entire multiverse. Thus, the TVA was founded to keep the number of timelines down to a minimum. But the TVA’s methods weren’t right. Luckily, there is a better idea in place. An idea involving remarkable individuals and fighting battles others never could.

The Watcher knows that what’s at stake goes beyond his oath. However, he also knows he can’t make things worse. So, why not create a team of multiverse-spanning Avengers to protect it? Because that seems to be what we’re headed for. And the Watcher’s already got his first recruit: Strange Supreme, who we last saw getting his universe destroyed.

This has to be the best episode of What If…? thus far. The action was superb, and it’s bringing all the disparate stories together into one plot. I can’t wait for the finale next week! Multiverse Avengers, assemble!

Thanks to COVID-19, it’s been more than two years since the MCU graced movie theaters. And while that problem was somewhat alleviated by the string of MCU shows on Disney+, it’s no substitute for sitting in theaters and waiting for the post-credits scene with your friends and family. This weekend, though, that drought came to an end with the arrival of Black Widow. This was a film that was long overdue for the titular hero in more ways than one.

Black Widow’s Past

Set in between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, Black Widow, first and foremost, sheds light on what Natasha Romanoff did while on the run. At first, she tried to hide from everyone, but with a past as checkered as hers, hiding isn’t possible for the Black Widow. When an old enemy that she thought to be dead returns, Natasha’s forced on a globe-trotting adventure to put the demons of her past behind her for good. And without the Avengers to help her, she’s got to rely on allies from her Red Room days.

If the Red Room sounds familiar to anyone, then there’s a reason for it. It’s the official name for what’s been dubbed as the Black Widow Program. While flashbacks and Natasha’s own accounts of the program have hinted at what it was like, the MCU gave us our best look back in the short-lived Agent Carter series on ABC. Essentially, it was a Soviet black ops program that spent decades brainwashing young girls and turning them into master assassins. And Natasha was one of those unfortunate girls subjected to it. While she managed to get out thanks to the help of Hawkeye, it’s clear that she’s still haunted by what she went through. And whether she wants to or not, the film sees her confront her past.

A Family Story

The thing that’s most surprising about Black Widow is the central theme. Under the James Bond meets Jason Bourne meets Mission Impossible action, Black Widow is a family story. Granted, it’s a story about a very dysfunctional found family.

When she was a kid, Natasha was raised alongside another Black Widow trainee, Yelena Belova. The two were raised by a Black Widow veteran and the Russian supersoldier known as the Red Guardian. They acted as a family unit in deep cover, and much of the film’s emotional arc comes from Yelena still seeing them as such. Albeit, they’re a broken and dysfunctional one. 

Firstly, while Yelena still sees Natasha as a foster sister, she can’t hide her resentment that Nat indirectly left her behind in the Red Room, or that she went on to become a celebrated member of the Avengers. In addition, there’s Red Guardian, who’s the Russian equivalent to Captain America if Captain America were a drunk wash-up. That is what Red acts like in much of the film. He alternates between genuinely caring about his former charges and lamenting about his lost glory days. Then, we have Melina, the Black Widow veteran and scientist who trained Nat and Yelena. She acts like she doesn’t care about the girls and seems to have a lack of empathy at times. In one scene, she shows how she trained a pig to stop breathing for several seconds, much to Nat and Yelena’s discomfort. That was pretty messed up!

In other words, the four are a very unlikely family with strained relationships. And much of the film’s drama stems from them having to work out their many problems. But once they do, the four end up kicking ass.

The Big Bad is Such a Jerk

Then, we have the main villain of the film, Dreykov. If Red Guardian is the washed-up alcoholic father that wants to be better, then Dreykov is the abusive dad. He spends all of his time onscreen berating, beating, and mentally abusing the girls in his Black Widow Program. He doesn’t even see his Black Widows as people, but just resources he can replace. In other words, he’s an abusive, violent, oppressive misogynist with no redeeming values whatsoever. 

While the MCU’s been known to give us both flat and three-dimensional, realistic villains, Dreykov’s one of the flattest out there. He’s a hate sink that makes everyone around him miserable, and the kind of person everyone can easily root against. That’s not a bad thing, though. The MCU doesn’t have to make each of its villain’s as great as Thanos, Loki, or Killmonger. 

The MCU Has Returned

After spending almost two years without any MCU films, it felt really great to be able to sit in theaters again alongside my fellow fans. Black Widow offers us a return to the franchise that, for better or for worse, has dominated our culture for the last decade or so. Black Widow’s fans have wanted to see her get her own movie for years, and Black Widow delivered. 

However, the film also emphasized that, as of Phase 4, the MCU’s not just going to be about the films. It’s investing more into its TV shows and miniseries. Case in point, rather than tee us up for a sequel film, the post-credits scene connects the film to the upcoming Hawkeye series on Disney+. It’s the first time the MCU’s done that, and represents a shift in how it will continue in the future. Here’s hoping the next decade continues the franchise’s success.

WandaVision Episode 5 Review

“On a Very Special Episode…”. How appropriate of a title for the new episode of WandaVision. In a show that’s already proven to be an insane mind-screw, Marvel just managed to kick things up to newer, crazier heights this week. On a very special episode of WandaVision, the wall between Westview and the world at large begins to crumble before we get a bombshell ending that could change the MCU forever.

THIS IS YOUR FIRST AND ONLY WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD. IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED WANDAVISION YET, DO SO NOW!

Vision Knows

We all knew that Vision would eventually learn the truth. Since episode 3, he’s been becoming aware that something’s wrong in Westview. But in this episode, Vis learns that Wanda’s controlling everyone in town. In a particularly terrifying scene, Vision frees the real personality of the townsperson called Norm, and we learn that the people of Westview remain fully aware of what’s going on, but can’t do anything about it. They’re prisoners in their own body, and it seems that Wanda’s the Warden.

Wanda tries to deny everything at first, but that only makes Vision angry. We’ve never seen him angry before; and he has every right to be. It turns out, he can’t remember anything from his life before Westview; Wanda’s blocking his memories to protect him from the knowledge that he’s dead. That, and this episode confirms why the Avengers didn’t try to bring him back: he didn’t want to be. He won’t be happy to learn that Wanda disregarded his wishes.

Wanda’s Fully Aware of What’s Happening.

When the show started, it was left ambigious as to how aware Wanda was of what’s going on. Some thought that she’s doing everything without realizing it. This episode, though, eliminates that ambiguity for good. After S.W.O.R.D. uses an old drone to talk to her (and the director tries to off her) she leaves Westview to confront S.W.O.R.D. directly.

Her only message to them: stay out of Westview or she’ll tear them all apart.

If you’ve followed Wanda’s journey through the MCU thus far, then you’ll know that her life’s been one big conga line of trauma. She lost her parents at age 10. Her brother was killed by Ultron. She tried to be a hero, but became a fugitive, only to find love with Vision. Then Thanos took him away from her.

I saw the look in Wanda’s eyes: she’s done letting the universe take things away from her. Now, she wants to take back from the universe, something I’d understand. That said, she’s dragged an entire town of innocent people into her despair and pain. She needs help before she crosses a line that she can’t turn back from.

Unfortunately for the multiverse, she may have already done that.

“She Recast Pietro?!”

Here it is, folks: the moment that could change the MCU forever. In the final moments of the episode, Wanda, Vision, S.W.O.R.D., and viewers at home got the mother of all bombshells when a very special episode ended with a very special new arrival: Pietro, back from the dead.

Except, it’s not the MCU’s Pietro.

Somehow, instead of the MCU Pietro, we got a new one, played by Evan Peters. If you’ve never seen the X-Men films, then Peters plays Pietro in that now-defunct franchise. The fact that there were two Pietro’s was due to Fox being its own separate entity at the time, but now that Disney owns them (and thus the rights to the X-Men), fans expect the X-Men to eventually join the MCU. The question was how, though? Would they be new iterations of the X-Men, or would the original franchise somehow migrate to the MCU. Given how Marvel seems keen on making Phase 4 the time to explore the greater multiverse, it may end up being the latter. And we could have just seen the first step to that.

I’m serious. People are going crazy all over the Internet, coming up with theories that somehow, the X-Men franchise is in a separate universe that will merge with the MCU, giving us the Mutants and X-Men. However, does this mean that this their Quicksilver, or an illusion constructed by Wanda’s powers. Or is Kevin Feige and Marvel trolling us? I have no clue, but I’m more invested in ever with this show!

A Very Special Episode, Indeed

There are so many ways that WandaVision could end right now, and all of them will change the MCU forever. One way or another, Marvel’s going all in with the next phase of their cinematic universe, and I am loving it. This is the kind of show that fans will be talking about for years to come.

If you haven’t watched this show yet, then go get Disney+ and watch it. It’s worth every penny!!

• Okay, I know these commercials are recapping important and traumatic moments in Wanda’s life, but this is stretching it.

WandaVision Episode 4 Review

We interrupt this program of your weekly dose of WandaVision to bring you this important news bulletin: I TOTALLY CALLED IT ABOUT WANDAVISION!!

No, seriously. I was right about my theory about the show: Wanda’s created a sitcom fantasy world to live out her dream life with Vision, who is still dead! The truth. Will. SHOCK YOU! Prepare for spoilers from beyond this point.

S.W.O.R.D. and the Rambeau Family

The episode starts off concurrently with the events of Avengers: Endgame, as we learn that Monica Rambeau (who we last saw as a kid in Captain Marvel) was one of the people Thanos snapped away, only to come back. In the chaos that followed, we learn a sad truth: Maria Rambeau, died of cancer in the five years between Infinity War and Endgame.

It was lightly touched upon in Spiderman: Far from Home how the actions of Thanos and their reversal had unimaginable socio-political fallout. Families were torn apart, never to be put back together. Jobs were lost, homes were lost. It’s just flat out cruel. I hope that, in the future, the MCU will explore the social fallout of “the Snap,” but for now, Monica has a job to do.

Quick background: S.W.O.R.D. is a sister organization to S.H.I.E.L.D., but the former focuses on threats from deep space. In-universe, Maria Rambeau founded it after Captain Marvel. But after the events of Thanos, they switched focus to dealing with sentient weapons and AI. Which is what leads Monica to Westview, New Jersey and for this to happen.

We Interrupt this Program

As a result of Monica’s disappearance, S.W.O.R.D. and every branch of the armed forces show up. And as the events of the previous episodes progress, they piece together everything that’s going on.

Firstly, we learn that all the characters are, in fact, the residents of Westview. They’re unwilling actors in this “show”. Secondly, any attempts to enter Westview result in objects or people conforming to the setting of the show. Finally, we confirm something that I already knew: Wanda’s fighting against any incursions into her perfect life. Case in point, she throws Monica out of the bubble world.

I’m still not sure if Wanda’s aware of what she’s doing, but on some level, she knows. She knows that Vision is dead, but she’s in denial. And that denial has led to her creating this sitcom world for herself, complete with a reanimated Vision. It’s a sickening sight to behold, and I won’t show you the image.

What’s the Plan Now?

So, now that S.W.O.R.D. knows that Wanda’s the one behind this sitcom, what will they do now? They have to find some way to interrupt this program and turn everything back to normal. But that’s the thing: I don’t know how.

No, seriously. I knew going in how this came about; it’s resolving it that I’m in the dark over. I mean, I have a few ideas, but that’s about it. I do know one thing, though: as WandaVision heads into the 1980s, things are going to keep falling apart even further.

In the meantime, I recommend you watch this show. It’s the first big show of 2021 and it needs to be nominated for an Emmy ASAP!

WandaVision Episode 3 Review

After careful deliberation and consulting my knowledge of the history of Marvel comics, I believe that I have come to a conclusion as to what’s going on in WandaVision. Yeah, it’s all Wanda’s doing; she trapped an entire town in a reality-altering bubble so she can have her happy life with Vision. And the twins. They now magically have twins.

If you know Wanda’s history in the comics, this will make a lot more sense. If not, then buckle up. This is going to get weird. I love the 70’s intro, though.

Unexpected Twins

After Wanda forcibly reset her ideal life at the end of last episode, the show moved into the full color of the 70s. The big difference, though, was that now she was unexpectedly pregnant with twins!

Normally, the birth of twins would be a cause for excitement and celebration. In a sitcom about a synthezoid and a pseudo-magical girl, though, it leads to hijinks. As Wanda’s pregnancy rapidly progresses due to her magic, she starts messing things up around the house. By the time Vision goes to get the doctor again, Wanda’s gone into labor. Fortunately, “Geraldine” helps deliver the twins safely. Bada bing, Wanda and Vision have two boys: Tommy and Billy!

Like I said, this should be cause for celebration. But the viewers note that more cracks are beginning to form in Wanda’s dream life. And more people are beginning to notice.

Something is Wrong in Westview

The first thing that shows something’s wrong is how fast Wanda goes from pregnant into labor: a few hours. Even factoring in magic or superpowers, that’s not normal! But it’s more than that, though. Vision starts to catch on that something is very, very wrong in Westview, bringing up the unexplained occurences in the previous episodes. The fact that Wanda begins to panic as he mentions them only confirms my supsicions: Wanda is actively fighting any attempts to break whatever is going on. At one point, she even rewinds events so that Vision never brings up these supsicions.

The biggest clue we got as to what’s happening doesn’t even come from the main characters, though. It comes from the supporting cast. Several people in Westview make comments on how strange things are, or how hard it is to escape. And then “Geraldine” drops a bombshell when she mentions how Wanda’s brother was killed by Ultron. In the next scene, Wanda coldly tells a confused Vision that “Geraldine” had to leave. Then the setting (and camera angles) bring us back to reality as we see “Geraldine” being flung out of some kind of bubble.

Based on this, I was able to figure out some important details about the mystery of the show. Westview is, in fact, a real location, and most, if not all, of the people living there real people. Given how scared they are, I can only assume that they were unwillingly dragged into whatever crazy mess is going on. And on some level, they seem to be aware of the danger they’re in and are trying to escape.

Bottom line, whatever’s happening to Wanda is worse than we could have imagined.

What of the Twins?

But what of the twins, Tommy and Billy? Are they real, or are they a product of this illusion? The most likely answer is, yes and no.

In my previous review, I mentioned how Wanda had kids that were erased from existence. There’s a reason why: they were fragments to the soul of a very powerful, demonic entity. When he reabsorbed them, they ceased to exist. However, they ended up reincarnating as two teenagers who would become the superheroes Wiccan and Speed.

When the series inevitably ends and we uncover the mystery of WandaVision, will the twins end up ceasing to exist. Or will they mirror their comic book counterparts and reincarnate? Either way, this is a big bombshell to drop on us.

I don’t know what’s going to happen next, but I think that every MCU fan should be paying attention to this. It’s going to lead big changes going forward.
